Echoes is an all-day café in Gandipet, run almost entirely by a deaf and hard-of-hearing team. Roman woodfired pizza, sushi and dumplings, a coffee house of its own — and a room where the whole conversation happens without a word.

Our Story

Empowerment, not charity.

In 2015, six friends opened a forty-seat café in Satya Niketan, Delhi on one stubborn idea: that deaf people belong at the front of a restaurant, not hidden in the back of it. They hired their first team through the Noida Deaf Society and built the room around them.

Ten years on, Echoes employs more than forty deaf and hard-of-hearing people across Delhi, Hyderabad and Bhopal. Hyderabad opened in 2021. Every server, every runner, almost everyone on the Gandipet floor is deaf — and the service is quicker than most rooms where people can shout.

How It Works

Ordering without a word.

Four small inventions replace the usual back-and-forth. Guests pick them up in about a minute, and most leave having learned a little sign language they didn't come for.

  1. Press the bell

    A switch sits on your table. Press it and a bulb lights at the service counter — whoever is closest has already seen it.

  2. Write the code

    Every dish carries a code. You write them on the pad — no repeating yourself, no misheard order. It's why the menu here reads H2, Z6, P9.

  3. Hold up a cue card

    Fork. Spoon. Knife. Bring the menu. Clear the table. Pack the food. The whole request, in one card.

  4. Say thank you back

    Flat hand to your chin, then forward. The wall by the courtyard will teach you the rest — and your server will happily correct you.
